The seventies were a time of trauma both in Vietnam and the United States. An unwanted war, rampant prejudice and confusion about the role of the ordinary citizen permeated everyday conversations and everyday actions. The feeling of "Big Brother" watching and controlling events impacted on the young men who were old enough to serve their country; young women who waited, as well as parents who had to adjust to a new, more open way of thinking. This is the story of a young man¹s rite of passage, his coming of age in a country that is ripped apart with differing convictions, and his struggle against prejudice and the resulting tragic family events.
Excerpt from The Conversion of Nathan Poole :
Our hearts are not just pumps. They're also timepieces made of a collection of muscle, cells, and blood vessels that are a reflection of the universe. He paused a moment and looked off sadly at the gray, darkening horizon. Then why does mine ache? Where did that pain come from? But he knew what caused his pain; he couldn't deny any longer that the losses overwhelmed him at times, leaving a dull pain quietly burning in the dark recesses of his heart, never quite put out by time or events, and never, really, a stranger to him. With more than a faint sense of despair, Nathan asked himself, Will it always be this way?
